Hi to our Family & Friends! I know we sound like a broken record here, but please forgive us for the lack of communication to you all personally and corporately! We have just finished our busiest time of year that began in late May. We welcomed over 300 international visitors (each coming for a 2-3 week visit) during this 3-month period. Plus 100 international mission students that attend our Harvest Missions School, PLUS 150 Mozambican Bible School students PLUS on 100‘s of children per day! WHEW...a lot of people! But even in the busyness of everyday life here, we are sorry we did not take time to write to many of you. The list of why’s could go on from poor internet connections to lack of time, but we will just say FORGIVE US! We promise to do better! Thank you for keeping us close to your hearts in prayer! :)
This month I (Jennifer) wanted to share an experience that really moved my heart. Heidi Baker, (her and her husband Rolland are the founders of this ministry) shared one of her messages on a sermon Jesus spoken in the book of Matthew called the “Beatitudes” Heidi shared this in our Harvest Missions School. I had a spare moment to sit in and listen! (YAY!) She quoted Jesus saying: “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.” She shared her stories about some of her experiences teaching local Mozambican leaders in our Bible School. Local students were asked “How many here have had family members die due to starvation?” and 20 or so would raise their hand. In the west when asking this question, no one raises their hands. These Bible students were pastors and church leaders in Mozambique. There were many among them who had someone in their family die from not having food. Some family members died to feed their kids...the families would eat off of a root from a water lily and dive in the local rivers to get them. They don’t have the fast food restaurant down the street or even a grocery store to buy food...or even the means to kill animals for meat. So they eat roots of water lilies. The rivers are full of crocodiles and the chances of losing your life were great. But they did it because they wanted to save the lives of their kids. They would do anything to satisfy the hunger in their kids...taking risks that would cost them their life. It is a sobering fact when you are sitting looking around the room seeing this story is a reality for so many. They understand the cost hunger and thirst have on a person. They know the pains of being hungry and thirsty...and what they will risk to be filled. These are the ‘riches of the poor’. When God speaks about hungering for righteousness, the poor understand this at a level you and I may never understand...
Heidi then spoke on righteousness (right standing with God and/or justice) and said righteousness looks like this : “No child should die of starvation. Every child should be able to go to school and get an education...” and the list grew for justice for the poor children of the world. My heart was wrenched. I am sitting in the dirt of an outdoor classroom. I am sitting with people from all over the world. My culture, “the west” is only 1/3 of the world’s population. 2/3’s of the world live with fears of starvation, sex trade, slavery, poverty, sickness, etc. Righteousness...what does it look like in God’s heart? In God’s eyes? Not like we think in our natural mind...
As Heidi was finishing her stories, a Brazilian Pastor from one of our bases in the south who is a student in the Missions school interrupted class holding an african boy between the age of 7 & 10 years old. The pastor was holding this limp little body in his arms. The child had long thin legs and a lot of scabs on his sweet little face. He had a lot of green mucus dripping from his nose, some of which was crusted over because no one had wiped it clean. Pastor Roberto held this child in his arms and said to Heidi “Please, we need to pray for this child now!” She agreed. Heidi stopped her stories and asked for us to gather around the boy to pray. Pastor Roberto calls out to the students, “This is Paulo. He has AIDS. Who here has the faith to pray for his healing? Who has the faith to believe?
So many of us gather around this weak little guy to pray. The atmosphere is charged with desperate hearts of prayer and you could feel great sadness growing among all of us. Many of us were crying over this child, calling out to God for His righteousness and justice to come forth for this little one named Paulo. He is someone’s son. He is someone’s grandchild or nephew. He has hopes, dreams and desires. He may like puppies and sports. He may be a musician or an engineer. The mood in the room felt like we were at Paulo’s funeral. I began to feel the heart of our prayers were starting to come from a place of hopelessness...
Then as if someone was bubbling up all this energy inside of me, these words came bursting out of my mouth: “WHAT DO YOU SEE? BEGIN TO SPEAK WHAT YOU WANT SEE IN THIS BOYS LIFE. BEGIN TO SPEAK LIFE OVER HIM AND DECLARE HIS FUTURE INTO EXISTENCE. WHAT DO YOU SEE?” So everyone begins to speak life and words of what the Lord was showing us about his future. “I see you as a healthy boy!” “I see you happy and playing with other kids!” More words, more prayers and again out of my mouth came “WHO DO YOU SEE?” “WHO DO YOU SEE IN HIM?” So the crowd began to speak who this child is in Christ. “He is a son of God” “He is royalty, a prince!” “He has a destiny in God!” “He has a future!” Words of Life. Life. Life. I knew these words were not coming from me, but the Jesus in me. Jesus was calling out for righteousness through me. I was hungry to see righteousness for this little hurting boy. The mood in the room began to change from somberness to one full of faith and hope!
We were hungering and thirsting for righteousness! This class of stories just became a real life experience. It was like God was saying “Here is real life. My children, practice now what I am teaching you. See in the supernatural realm which is more real than the natural”
The Lord spoke to me later saying “YOU bring the kingdom of heaven to earth by declaring life over the child. There is no AIDS or sickness in heaven. I have given my children on earth the keys of life in Jesus Christ. When you believe in your heart that I can heal and you release your faith in speaking life over this child, you will see a miracle happen! In the natural he looks hopeless, but in the spirit, he has life.”
WOW...and here it was, not a story in the Bible that took place 2000 years ago, but I and many others were face to face with this reality...what am I going to believe? Who am I going to believe?
Paulo’s mother had brought little Paulo into our clinic several times for care. When our nurses gave antibiotics for Paulo to take, the mother would take them instead. She seemed to not know how to care for her little one. Pastor Roberto and his wife took care of little Paulo for several days after the class. The nurses at the clinic say Paulo was so different! This couple cleaned up his face, cared for his scabs and open sores on his body and loved him as if he was their own. Little Paulo was transformed. Not by medicine, but by love. He was not even recognizable to many after the love and care he received from this pastor and his wife. He was healthier and happier. His countenance had changed completely. His family brought home a different, happier healthier boy.
“Blessed (Happy) are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness...for they will be filled.”
Please pray for Paulo and his family. We do not believe his mom knows the love of God through Jesus. We hope she is not involved in witchcraft which is common here. We also see signs of neglect each time the nurses go to his home for follow up care. Children who have medical issues are often believed to be cursed, so the family may neglect care for them. We are believing God for the life of this innocent little boy. There are many Paulo’s out there...
Roberto, who cared for little Paulo, used to be a serious drug addict and contracted the AIDS virus. God healed him completely of the disease and his drug addiction. He then gave his life to Jesus. Now, years later, he was moved with compassion to see the same Jesus who loved and healed him of AIDS love and heal this little boy...
One of Heidi’s final comments in the class before prayer was, “If you believe that Jesus died so there is always enough, then you will have the boldness to go and do the impossible, because He is always enough...He can take your little life and do the impossible.”
He can make a difference through your little life...and change someone else’s little life, for the Glory of His Name!
We love you all so much!
